Basement flood cleanout: hauling wet drywall and carpet
Move fast: the EPA says mold usually won't grow if wet materials are dried within 24 to 48 hours, so pull soaked carpet, pad and swollen drywall early. Photograph everything and keep small samples for your insurer before you haul. A 7x14 dump trailer is $165 a day ($174.90 with tax), plus the county's per-ton fee for construction debris.
Key takeaways
- 24 to 48 hours: EPA's window to dry wet materials before mold is likely.
- Photos and small samples first; FloodSmart says they help prove your loss.
- A level 7x14 bed is 7.17 yd³; dry mixed debris runs about 1.5 to 1.7 tons per load.
- Howard's Alpha Ridge charges $106/ton for C&D, plus a 2.45% card fee.
- No paint, chemicals or liquids in the load.
What has to go, and how fast?
Anything that can't be dried within 24 to 48 hours, which in a flooded basement usually means carpet pad, insulation, ceiling tiles and swollen drywall.
The EPA's mold guidance says mold generally won't grow if wet items are dried in that window. It also notes:
- Carpet: a wet vac alone won't dry it. Carpet and pad have to be pulled up and dried, and the pad is often the first thing to go.
- Drywall: it can sometimes be dried in place if it isn't swollen and the seams are intact. If it's swollen or the seams have let go, it comes out.
- Insulation, ceiling tiles, books and papers: often have to be discarded.
- Upholstered furniture: hard to dry within 48 hours. For valuable pieces, the EPA suggests a restoration pro.
If water reached outlets or the electrical panel, get the power shut off by a pro before anyone works down there.
What should I document before I haul anything?
Take wide and close-up photos and video of everything, mark the water line, and keep small samples of carpet, drywall and insulation for your adjuster.
FEMA's FloodSmart program recommends photographing damaged items before cleaning, fixing or throwing them out, recording serial numbers on appliances and electronics, and keeping small pieces of ruined materials. If you start repairs before the claim settles, keep every receipt.
Add your trailer receipt and scale tickets to that pile. Each ticket shows the date, weight and fee, which is a clean record of what left the house.
Two more tips before the first load leaves. Take a quick photo of each trailer load before you tarp it, so the pictures line up with the scale tickets. And keep a running list of what you threw out, room by room, while it's fresh. Adjusters ask for both, and it's much easier to do it as you go than to rebuild it from memory a month later.

See prices and bookHow much debris does a flooded basement make?
It depends on how much you tear out, but plan on volume first and weight second: a level 7x14 bed holds about 7.17 cubic yards.
Mixed construction debris runs about 417 to 484 lb per cubic yard dry. A level 7x14 load of it weighs about 2,990 to 3,470 lb, or 1.5 to 1.7 tons, well under the trailer's 9,820-lb payload. Wet carpet, pad and drywall weigh more than dry, so expect the scale ticket to come in higher than the dry estimate.
Example: pulling carpet and pad from a finished basement plus the bottom 2 to 4 feet of drywall is often one 7x14 load, sometimes two with furniture. For a room-by-room estimate, use the load calculator. If you'll be hauling over several days, compare a dumpster with the dumpster vs dump trailer calculator.
Where can I take wet drywall and carpet?
To your county's construction and demolition (C&D) scale, which weighs rental-trailer loads and charges by the ton.
| Site | Rate for trailer loads | 1.5 to 1.7 ton load | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Howard, Alpha Ridge | $106/ton C&D | About $158 to $184 | Trailer/rental counts as commercial; +2.45% card fee; Howard waste only |
| Anne Arundel, Millersville | $100/ton | About $149 to $174 | Applies to rental or double-axle trailers |
| Baltimore County, Eastern Sanitary | $125/ton, $10 min | About $187 to $217 | Small C&D quantities only |
| Baltimore City, Quarantine Rd | $135/ton | About $202 to $234 | |
| Carroll, Northern Landfill | $85/ton, $8 min | About $127 to $147 | |
| Baltimore Recycling Center (private, Edison Hwy) | $93/ton, 1-ton min | About $139 to $161 | Any county |
Dry-weight estimates; wet loads weigh more. Landfill fees, hours and rules are set by each county or site and can change without notice. We don't control them; call the site before you go.
None of these sites opens on Sunday. County details are on where to dump, and what you can take to a Maryland landfill covers the banned list.
How do I load wet debris?
Heavy stuff low and forward, tarp on top, and nothing that leaks or burns.
- Roll carpet and pad into tight rolls and cut them to fit the bed. Wet rolls are heavy; two people per roll.
- Load drywall flat along the floor of the bed. Broken pieces fill gaps.
- Bag the small stuff (insulation, ceiling tile bits) in contractor bags so it doesn't blow out.
- Keep it legal. Paint, chemicals, fuel and liquids don't go in. Anne Arundel, for one, bans liquids, chemicals and oil-based paints at its landfill and recycling centers.
- Tarp it. Wet insulation and carpet fibers make a mess on the road.
Drain what you can before loading. Dripping water adds weight you'll pay for at the scale.
Should I let IronBay dump it for me?
If you're short on time or the landfill is closed when you're done, Return It Loaded lets you bring the trailer back full and we dump it for the county scale price plus $49.
That's handy when you finish on a Saturday night or Sunday. You can return 24/7; returns after 6pm add a $25 late drop-off fee, and a trailer not back by 7am the next morning is charged another day.

Questions
Can I put flood-damaged furniture in the trailer?
Yes. Photograph it first for your claim. Mattresses and upholstered pieces are bulky, so they eat volume fast.
Does a flooded basement need a pro?
For sewage backups, large mold growth or electrical exposure, call a restoration company. For clean-water damage you can handle, a trailer and a wet vac go a long way.
Can I leave the trailer in my driveway overnight?
Usually yes, but check your HOA or village covenants. See our guide to parking a rental trailer in Columbia.
