Can I park a rental trailer in my driveway in Columbia?
For a short project rental, usually yes, but check your village's covenants. Columbia villages such as Oakland Mills and Hickory Ridge don't allow trailers to be stored in the open, so a trailer that sits for days can draw a covenant notice. On the street, Howard County limits commercial vehicles to 6 hours. The safest plan is a short rental and a quick return.
Key takeaways
- Oakland Mills and Hickory Ridge bar storing trailers in the open.
- Hickory Ridge allows dumpsters and storage units up to 30 days per calendar year.
- Howard Code § 21.232: commercial vehicles on residential streets max 6 hours.
- Street fines run $250, $500 and $750.
- A 6x12 for a day is $119 ($126.14 with tax).
What do Columbia's village covenants say about trailers?
Each of Columbia's villages has its own covenants and architectural guidelines, and the two we checked both bar storing trailers in the open.
| Village | Trailers | Dumpsters / storage units |
|---|---|---|
| Oakland Mills | Not allowed to be stored in the open | Dumpster allowed for 30 days |
| Hickory Ridge | Campers, boats, trailers and other trailered equipment may not be stored in the open on any lot | Up to two storage units plus dumpsters, no more than 30 days per calendar year; call the Covenant Advisor (410-730-7327) before delivery |
| Other villages | Rules vary. Call your village's covenant advisor. | |
The guidelines talk about storage. They don't say how many hours or days of a working rental counts as storing. A trailer you load Saturday and return Sunday is a different thing from one parked for two weeks, but only your village can tell you where its line is. If you're not sure, call before you book.
Can I park it on the street instead?
Not for long. Howard County Code § 21.232 limits commercial vehicles parked on residential streets to 6 hours, with fines of $250, $500 and $750.
A dump trailer on the street also blocks your neighbors. If the driveway works, use it. If it doesn't, plan to load and go within the same few hours, or use delivery and pickup so the trailer isn't sitting. Our guide on how to back up a trailer helps with tight driveways.
There's also a practical reason to keep it off the street: a loaded 7x14 dump trailer can weigh up to 14,000 lb (4,180 lb empty plus 9,820 lb payload), and you don't want to unhitch that on a slope or at a curb. Driveway, wheels chocked, jack on a board or pad, and it stays put.

Check availabilityWhat about a dumpster instead?
A dumpster is allowed in Howard County for up to 60 days at a maximum of 8 by 16 by 8 feet under zoning, but your village may allow less, like Hickory Ridge's 30 days per calendar year.
That makes the trade-off simple. A dumpster sits in the driveway for a week or more and needs village notice. A dump trailer can be in and out the same day. A one-day trailer job is often $90 to $200 less than a 15-yard dumpster, which runs $350 to $685 in Columbia; a dumpster wins for slow jobs or 3+ loads. How do I keep the trailer's time in the driveway short?
Rent the shortest block that fits the job, load it in one push, and bring it back as soon as you're done.
| Option | Base | With 6% MD tax |
|---|---|---|
| 7x14 dump, day | $165 | $174.90 |
| Delivery in Howard, each way | $75 | $79.50 |
- Stage first. Have the debris piled at the garage before the trailer arrives.
- Text OFF when you're done to stop billing.
- Return any time. Pickup and return run 24/7. Returns after 6pm add a $25 late drop-off fee, and a trailer not back by 7am the next morning is charged another day.

How do I check my village's rules?
Call or email your village's covenant advisor, and ask about your exact plan, with dates.
Each Columbia village publishes its own architectural guidelines and has staff who answer covenant questions. A good message is short: "I'm renting a dump trailer for a garage cleanout. It will be in my driveway from Saturday 8am to Sunday 6pm. Is that OK?" Asking ahead is better than answering a notice afterward.
- Ask whether a short project rental counts as storage.
- Ask whether they want notice before a dumpster or trailer arrives, the way Hickory Ridge does for dumpsters and storage units.
- If you live in a separate HOA or condo association inside Columbia, ask them too. Their rules can add to the village's.
What does a fast Columbia driveway cleanout look like?
Sort Friday, load Saturday morning, dump before the landfill closes, and return the same day.
- Friday night: sort keep, donate and toss. Pile the toss pile by the garage door.
- Saturday 8am: pick up or take delivery of the trailer. Back it in tight to the pile.
- Saturday morning: load heavy items first, low and toward the front. Tarp it.
- Saturday afternoon: dump at Alpha Ridge (Monday to Saturday; no county landfill here opens Sunday), or bring it back loaded and let us dump it for the scale price plus $49.
- Saturday evening: return it. Before 6pm avoids the late drop-off fee.
The trailer spends a few hours in your driveway, not days. Our how it works page walks through pickup and return.
Landfill fees, hours and rules are set by each county or site and can change without notice. We don't control them; call the site before you go. Alpha Ridge treats trailer and rental loads as commercial, so plan on a scale ticket: mixed C&D is $106 a ton there, plus a 2.45% card fee.
What if I get a covenant notice?
Move the trailer, then call the village office to explain it was a short project rental.
Keep your rental receipt; it shows the dates. And if you're a renter or in a condo, check with your landlord or HOA too, since their rules can be stricter than the village's.
Questions
Can a trailer sit on my lawn instead of the driveway?
A loaded dump trailer can sink and rut soft grass. Keep it on pavement when you can.
Do I need a permit to park a rental trailer in my own driveway?
We're not aware of a county permit for a short driveway rental, but covenants still apply.
Does the 6-hour rule apply to my pickup and trailer?
The rule covers commercial vehicles. If you're unsure whether your rig counts, keep it off the street.
