Can I dump on Sunday near Columbia, MD?

Short answer

No. None of the county landfills around Columbia opens on Sunday. Alpha Ridge, Millersville, Eastern Sanitary, Quarantine Road and Carroll's Northern Landfill all run Monday to Saturday, and most stop taking loads by mid-afternoon on Saturday. To work on Sunday, load the trailer then and return it with IronBay's Return It Loaded service. We dump it for the county scale price plus $49.

The short version: if your project runs through Sunday, the dump run has to happen Saturday or wait until Monday. Even Saturday hours end early at most sites. Carroll's Northern Landfill closes at 3pm Saturday, and Eastern Sanitary stops letting vehicles in at 3:15pm.

Why does Saturday afternoon catch people out?

Because the transfer station closes earlier than the rest of the site, and the line at the scale counts.

At Alpha Ridge, residents' drop-off runs to 4pm, but the transfer station, where trailer loads go, closes at 3pm. A trailer or rental counts as commercial there. You weigh in, unload, then weigh out. First-timers also need a $40-a-year commercial permit, and rental vehicles may need a special-exception form, so leave time for paperwork. Eastern Sanitary turns away new arrivals after 3:15pm.

If you're loading Saturday, aim to be in line by early afternoon. The Howard County dump guide has the step-by-step.

Bring what the scale house asks for. Howard's special-exception form asks for a Maryland driver's license with a Howard address, the driver's details, the vehicle registration and its registered owner, the vehicle type and where the waste came from. Have a card ready for the tip fee and the 2.45% card fee. Landfill fees, hours and rules are set by each county or site and can change without notice. We don't control them; call the site before you go.

Skip the landfill run

Return It Loaded: bring the trailer back full and we dump it for the county scale price plus $49.

What can you do with a full trailer on Sunday?

Bring it back loaded and let us take it to the scale on a weekday.

With Return It Loaded, you return the trailer full and we dump it for the county scale price plus $49. Your Sunday becomes a loading day, and nobody has to wait in line on Monday morning.

The weekend rate fits this well. It covers any 2 or 3 days in a row: $279 for the 7x14 ($295.74 with tax) or $199 for the 6x12 ($210.94). Pick up Friday afternoon and you have until the same time Monday, so you can dump it yourself Monday morning or use Return It Loaded. Book on the dump trailer rental page.

Can you return a loaded trailer after hours?

Yes. Pickup and return run 24/7 at 9550 Berger Road.

  • Returns after our 6pm close carry a $25 late drop-off fee.
  • A trailer not back by 7am the next morning is charged another day.
  • Text OFF when it's parked so billing stops.

Tarp and strap the load if it sits overnight, especially light material that can blow out of the bed.

After check-in, your $250 card hold is released within 24 hours. If anything needs a charge, you get an itemized notice with photos first. For Return It Loaded, the scale price and the $49 fee are added after we dump the load.

How do you plan a Saturday-to-Sunday job?

Get one load to the scale Saturday morning, then load the rest Sunday and return it.

  1. Friday afternoon: pick up on the weekend rate and stage the debris.
  2. Saturday by 1pm: leave with the first load so you're in line well before Alpha Ridge's 3pm transfer-station close.
  3. Saturday afternoon: keep working. Load the second round as you go.
  4. Sunday: finish loading, tarp it and return it to Berger Road before 6pm to avoid the $25 late fee.
  5. Text OFF and tell us it's a Return It Loaded drop. We take it to the scale on a weekday.

The 7x14 dump trailer holds 7.17 cubic yards per load, which cuts the number of trips.

What about private sites or special Sunday hours?

They exist, but call before you count on them.

The Baltimore Recycling Center on Edison Highway is a private site that charges $93 a ton with a 1-ton minimum and takes loads from any county; confirm its weekend hours directly. Counties sometimes add special hours after big storms. Check the county's news page or call before you go. Our where-to-dump guide lists each site we know about.

For yard waste only, Carroll County residents with proper ID can drop off yard waste from their own property free at Northern Landfill's yard waste site during normal Monday-to-Saturday hours. Even there, Sunday isn't an option, so plan the load around it.
