Renting vs buying a dump trailer for a small contractor

Short answer

Buy a dump trailer only if you'll use it most weeks. One dealer lists a new Big Tex 14LP-14 at $13,949 MSRP. That's about 80 rental days at $165/day ($174.90 with tax), or about 24 weeks at our $549 contractor weekly rate ($581.94 with tax), before you count insurance, registration, tires, storage and a heavy-duty tow vehicle.

Key takeaways

  • A new 7x14 14K dump lists at $13,949 MSRP at one dealer; that's ~80 rental days at $174.90.
  • At the $549 contractor weekly rate ($581.94 with tax), the sticker price equals ~24 rental weeks.
  • Ownership adds registration, insurance, tires, brakes, a battery, storage and downtime that renting doesn't.
  • Over 10,000 lb GVWR plus a 26,001+ lb combination in commercial use means a Class A CDL.
  • Rule of thumb: under roughly 40 days a year, renting usually wins; over 80, buying usually does.

What does a new 14K dump trailer actually cost?

A new 14,000-lb GVWR, 7x14 low-profile dump trailer lists for about $12,000 to $14,000 before tax, title and tags.

We run the Big Tex 14LP-14 in our yard, so that's the trailer we priced. One Big Tex dealer lists a 14LP-14 with 24-inch sides at a $13,949 MSRP and an $11,981 sale price. Prices move with steel costs and dealer stock, so get a written out-the-door quote before you decide.

The spec sheet is the same one we tow every day: 14,000 lb GVWR, about 4,180 lb empty, 9,820 lb payload, a 168 x 83 inch bed with 24-inch sides (7.17 cubic yards), a 2-5/16 inch ball coupler and electric brakes on both axles.

Maryland titling and registration depend on the trailer's weight and use, and the MVA charges by weight class. Check the current fee with the MVA before you budget.

How many rental days equal the price of a trailer?

At list price, a new 14K dump costs about the same as 80 days of rental at our day rate, or 24 weeks at the contractor weekly rate.

Rental optionBaseWith 6% taxRentals to equal $13,949 MSRPRentals to equal $11,981 sale
7x14 day$165$174.90~80 days~69 days
7x14 week (retail)$595$630.70~22 weeks~19 weeks
7x14 week (contractor account)$549$581.94~24 weeks~21 weeks

That's only the sticker price. Owning adds costs that renting already covers. Here's how annual rental spend stacks up at the day rate with tax:

Days rented per yearAnnual rental spend (with tax)
20$3,498
40$6,996
60$10,494
80$13,992

If you'd rent fewer than about 40 days a year, you'd need several years of rentals just to equal the purchase price. That's before you've paid for a tire or a battery. Running 3 or more units on a contractor account takes 10% off and moves the math further toward renting.

Weekly 7x14 dumps at $549 on account, another 10% off three or more units, PO numbers on receipts and no COI required.

What does owning a dump trailer cost beyond the purchase price?

The purchase price is the smallest part of owning a trailer you depend on every week. The rest is upkeep, compliance and downtime.

  • Registration and title. The MVA sets these by weight class and use.
  • Insurance. Your commercial auto policy has to cover the trailer. Ask your agent for the added premium.
  • Wear items. Tires (roofing nails find them), brake magnets, bearings, the hydraulic pump battery, the tarp and the lights.
  • Storage. A 14K dump needs somewhere legal to sit. Howard County Code § 21.232 limits commercial vehicles on residential streets to 6 hours, with fines of $250, $500 and $750. Baltimore County Code § 18-2-206 fines commercial trailers on residential roads $250 a day.
  • Downtime. If your only trailer is in the shop, the crew still needs one that morning.

When you rent from us, every unit gets the Road-Ready Guarantee: a 10-point check with photos texted to you. If it fails at pickup, we swap it or refund you.

Does buying change my tow vehicle or license needs?

Yes. A 14K dump needs a heavy-duty truck, and owning one for business use can push you into CDL territory.

A loaded 14K dump puts about 1,400–2,100 lb on the hitch. That's well past a 2026 F-150's 500 lb tongue and 5,000 lb trailer limit without weight distribution. A 2026 Silverado 2500HD is rated 14,500 lb (gas) to 18,500 lb (diesel) for conventional towing, with a brake controller standard. Your vehicle's manufacturer ratings and manual always win.

Licensing follows the combination, not who owns the trailer. Commercial use at 26,001 lb or more combined weight rating (GCWR), with a trailer over 10,000 lb GVWR, requires a Class A CDL. A 14,000 lb trailer behind a heavy-duty pickup can cross that line. Our CDL guide walks through the numbers.

Maryland also requires brakes on all wheels and a breakaway that holds for 15 minutes on trailers registered over 10,000 lb (Transportation Art. § 22-301). Our 6x12 dump is rated 9,900 lb GVWR, which keeps it under the 10,000 lb trailer line.

Not sure your truck is a match? Run it through the tow checker.

When does buying a dump trailer make sense?

Buying makes sense when the trailer works most weeks of the year and you have a truck, storage and someone to maintain it.

Your situationUsually better
Under ~40 trailer days a yearRent
Seasonal peaks (roofing spring–fall, mulch March–May, leaves October–December)Rent for the peak, or own one and rent extras
80+ days a year, same crew, own storage yardBuy

Plenty of crews do both: they own one trailer and rent the second for big jobs. For roofers there's a dedicated roofer program.

How does a contractor account work if I rent?

A contractor account keeps your card, your crew and your rates on file so booking takes one text.

Contractors pay before each rental, like everyone else, using the card on file. There are no net terms. In return you get the 7x14 weekly rate of $549 ($581.94 with tax) and 10% off when you run 3 or more units.

Delivery is $75 each way in Howard County ($79.50 with tax) and $125 each way in Anne Arundel, Baltimore and Carroll counties and the City of Laurel ($132.50 with tax). With Return It Loaded, we dump the trailer for the county scale price plus $49 ($51.94 with tax), so your crew stays on the roof. Set up an account on the contractor page.

Landfill fees, hours and rules are set by each county or site and can change without notice. We don't control them; call the site before you go.

Questions

Can I rent before I buy to test a trailer size?

Yes. Renting a 6x12 and a 7x14 on real jobs is the cheapest way to learn which size your work actually fills. Our size guide compares them.

Is a used dump trailer a better buy?

It can be, but inspect the hydraulics, battery, brakes, bearings, frame welds and floor before you pay, and confirm the title is clean through the MVA.

Do weekend rentals change the math?

Yes. The 7x14 weekend runs any 2 or 3 days in a row for $279 ($295.74 with tax), which covers a Saturday job for less than two day rentals.
