Estate cleanout checklist: donate, sell, recycle, dump

Short answer

Work in five passes: secure papers and valuables, set aside what family keeps, sell what's worth selling, donate and recycle what's usable, then haul the rest. In Howard County, electronics, mattresses, textiles, books and scrap metal can go to the Alpha Ridge Residents' Convenience Center. Chemicals go to household hazardous waste on Saturdays, April through November. A 7x14 dump trailer then handles the leftover junk.

Key takeaways

  • Sort in five passes: papers, keepers, sell, donate/recycle, dump.
  • Alpha Ridge's convenience center takes electronics (10 items a day), mattresses, textiles, books and scrap metal.
  • Household hazardous waste drop-off runs Saturdays 8am–4pm, April through November; the last 2026 date is November 28.
  • Howard County's donation directory lists 11 groups, including the Habitat ReStore in Columbia.
  • A 7x14 dump trailer is $165 a day ($174.90 with tax), or $279 for the weekend ($295.74 with tax).

Where do I start an estate cleanout?

Start with papers and valuables, before anyone carries a single bag to the curb.

  1. Secure documents. Wills, deeds, titles, bank and insurance statements, tax returns, passwords and keys. Box them and take them off site.
  2. Hunt for valuables. Check pockets, books, freezers, drawers and boxes for cash, jewelry and papers.
  3. Photograph each room before anything moves, for the family and for the estate's records.
  4. Agree on keepers. Use colored tape for each family member, and set a deadline for picking up.

This guide covers sorting and disposal only. For legal questions about the estate, talk to the executor or an estate attorney.

What should I sell, donate or recycle?

Sell the items worth more than a trip's worth of your time, donate what's usable, and recycle the rest before you rent anything to haul debris.

How do I handle chemicals and hazardous items?

Keep them out of the trailer and take them to household hazardous waste drop-off.

Howard County runs household hazardous waste collection at the Residents' Convenience Center, 2350 Marriottsville Road. It's residential only, Saturdays from 8am to 4pm, April through November. The last 2026 collection is Saturday, November 28. After that, store chemicals safely until spring.

The landfill rules ban liquid paint, solvents, acids, poisons, petroleum and other hazardous waste from regular loads. Drums of 5 gallons or more must be empty, with tops and bottoms removed. Old basements and garages are full of these, so do a chemical sweep before loading. Landfill fees, hours and rules are set by each county or site and can change without notice. We don't control them; call the site before you go.

How much will I need to haul, and with what?

Most estates still leave one or more trailer loads of junk after donations. Plan on a 7x14 dump trailer and book a weekend.

Our guide to how many dump trailer loads a house cleanout takes breaks it down by home size. A few ways to keep the cost down:

  • Book the weekend, any 2 or 3 days in a row, for $279 ($295.74 with tax). Load Saturday, dump Saturday morning, and finish Sunday. No county landfill opens on Sunday.
  • Use Return It Loaded on the last load. Bring it back full and we take it to the scale for the county scale price plus $49 ($51.94 with tax).
  • Load donations and recycling into an enclosed trailer or your own vehicle, separate from the junk.
  • Compare against a dumpster if the cleanout will stretch over weeks: dumpster vs dump trailer.

Alpha Ridge treats trailers as commercial loads that weigh in and out. Mixed junk is billed at $106 per ton. Landfill fees, hours and rules are set by each county or site and can change without notice. We don't control them; call the site before you go.

What supplies and helpers do I need?

Two to four people, a stack of boxes and bags, and a hand truck make an estate cleanout go about as fast as the sorting decisions allow.

SupplyWhy
Contractor bags (3 mil or heavier)Regular bags split on glass and sharp edges
Boxes, tape, markers, colored dotsLabel keep, sell, donate and recycle so nothing gets mixed up
Hand truck and furniture dollyFor dressers, appliances and safes
Work gloves, dust masks, safety glassesAttics and basements are dusty, and old boxes hide sharp things
Tarp and strapsLandfill rules require covered loads
Reflective vest and closed-toe shoesRequired on the Alpha Ridge transfer station floor
Phone and a notebookPhotos and a log of what went where, for the family and the executor

Give each person one job. One sorter makes keep, sell or donate calls with the family on the phone. Two carriers move things to the right pile. One loader packs the trailer, heavy items low and over the axles, light bags on top. Sorting is the bottleneck, so the trailer can wait until day two or three of a big house.

Keep a separate box for anything that looks like a document. Old tax returns, checks and statements turn up in odd places, and they should be shredded, not tossed loose into a trailer.

What's a realistic timeline?

Plan two to four weekends for a typical house, with most of the time spent sorting, not hauling.

WeekGoal
1Documents, valuables, photos, family picks
2Sale or consignment, schedule donation pickups
3Convenience Center runs (electronics, mattresses, metal, textiles) and the hazardous-waste Saturday
4Dump trailer weekend for everything left, then a broom sweep

If the estate is in Anne Arundel, Baltimore County, Baltimore City or Carroll, use that county's sites. Each county only takes its own waste. See where to dump.

Questions

Can you deliver the trailer to the estate?

Yes. Delivery is $75 each way in Howard ($79.50 with tax) and $125 each way in Anne Arundel, Baltimore and Carroll counties and the City of Laurel ($132.50 with tax).

Does the county pick up bulk items?

Residents who get county collection can request bulk trash and scrap metal pickups through the county's online form. The county suggests donating usable items first.

What if the family wants to stop renting early?

Text OFF and billing stops.
