Junk removal vs renting a dump trailer: which costs less?
For a small pickup of a few items, junk removal usually costs less. For a full truckload of 13 to 17 cubic yards, crews typically charge $600 to $800. Hauling the same volume yourself in two 7x14 dump trailer loads ($174.90 a day with tax) plus Howard County scale fees comes to roughly $440. You trade money for your own labor.
Key takeaways
- Junk removal full truck (13-17 yd³): $600-$800 nationally (HireAHelper).
- A 7x14 dump trailer holds 7.17 yd³ level and rents for $165/day ($174.90 with tax).
- Household junk weighs about 250-300 lb/yd³ uncompacted (EPA), so volume fills the trailer first.
- Under about 4 yd³, junk removal and DIY cost about the same.
- DIY means you load, tow and unload; junk removal includes the labor.
How do the prices compare by job size?
The bigger the job, the more a dump trailer saves. On a small job, junk removal can come out cheaper.
| Job size | Junk removal (national) | DIY with IronBay trailer (Howard example) |
|---|---|---|
| 1/4 truck, 3-4.5 yd³ | $125-$200 | 6x12 for a day $126.14 + ~0.6 ton $65.16 + $40 permit = about $231 |
| 1/2 truck, 4.5-11 yd³ | $200-$400 | 7x14 day $174.90 + ~1.05 tons $114.03 + $40 permit = about $329 |
| Full truck, 13-17 yd³ | $600-$800 | 7x14 day, two loads: $174.90 + ~2.1 tons $228.05 + $40 permit = about $443 |
Junk removal ranges are from HireAHelper's 2026 guide. LawnStarter's averages are similar: $375 for a half truck and $675 for a full truck. DIY assumes 300 lb per cubic yard and Alpha Ridge's $106-a-ton C&D rate, plus the 2.45% card fee (included in the disposal figures). The $40 permit is once a year. Trailer prices include 6% tax.
Landfill fees, hours and rules are set by each county or site and can change without notice. We don't control them; call the site before you go.
Anne Arundel is a little cheaper per ton. The same full-truck job at Millersville ($100 a ton for rental or double-axle trailers) is about $210 in disposal, or roughly $385 with the day rental, before any Anne Arundel permit or card fees. Carroll's Northern Landfill charges $85 a ton for C&D, but Alpha Ridge takes only Howard waste and every county sets its own rules, so use the site that fits your address.
What do you get for the extra money with junk removal?
You're paying for labor, the truck and the dump run in one price.
HireAHelper says baseline pricing usually includes one or two movers and 30-60 minutes of loading. Some crews also donate or recycle part of the load. With a trailer, you do the lifting, the driving and the unloading at the scale. That gap matters most if:
- items are on a second floor or in a tight basement
- you have no helper
- you only have a few bulky items, such as a sofa or a single appliance
- your vehicle can't tow the trailer (check the tow checker)
Angi lists hired loading labor at $50-$150 an hour. Hiring two hours of help and renting the trailer can still come in under a full-truck crew.
Example: the full-truck DIY job above is about $443. Add two hours of hired help at $50-$150 an hour and the total is roughly $543-$743. That's still at or below the $600-$800 full-truck crew range, and you control what goes in the load.

Compare my costsWhich option fits which job?
It comes down to how much stuff there is, how heavy it is, and how much lifting you can do.
| Job | Usually cheaper | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One sofa or one appliance | Junk removal | Single-item pricing beats a rental plus a scale trip |
| Garage or basement cleanout, 1-2 loads | Dump trailer | You pay for the tons, not the truck space |
| Whole-house or estate cleanout | Trailer on a weekly rate, or a dumpster | Several loads over several days |
| Upstairs items, no helpers | Junk removal | The labor is the hard part |
| Yard debris and brush | Dump trailer | Brush is light (about 127 lb/yd³), so tons stay low |
LawnStarter lists yard-waste removal at $170-$375 and post-storm yard cleanups up to $1,125. A 6x12 dump trailer for a day is $119 ($126.14 with tax).
How much junk fits in a dump trailer?
Our 7x14 holds 7.17 cubic yards level with its 24-inch sides. The 6x12 holds 4.44.
The EPA puts uncompacted mixed household waste at about 250-300 lb per cubic yard. A level 7x14 of household junk is roughly 1,800-2,150 lb, far under its 9,820 lb payload. So for furniture, boxes and clutter, you run out of space before weight. Plaster, tile and concrete flip that. For bigger jobs, see how much a dump trailer holds.
A full junk-removal truck is about 13-17 yd³. That's roughly two level 7x14 loads.
What are the hidden costs on each side?
Both options have extra fees. Ask about them before you book.
| Junk removal extras (national) | DIY trailer extras (IronBay) |
|---|---|
| Hazardous waste $50-$410 | Late drop-off after 6pm: $25 |
| Single items: sofa $175-$275, mattress $70-$130 | Another day if not back by 7am |
| Peak season (April-June) pricing | Howard: 2.45% card fee and $40/yr permit |
| Disassembly and extra labor | Your fuel and time |
Single-item and hazardous-waste figures are from LawnStarter. Hazardous waste can't go in either one. In Howard County, take paint and chemicals to the free household hazardous waste drop-off at Alpha Ridge (Saturdays, April-November).
Can you skip the dump run and still save?
Yes. Use Return It Loaded: fill the trailer, bring it back, and we dump it for the county scale price plus $49.
Example: a 1.05-ton half-truck load at $106 a ton is $111.30 in scale fees plus $49, on top of the $174.90 day rate. That's about $335 before any tax on the fee, and you skip the landfill line and Alpha Ridge's commercial rules. It's useful on Sundays, when no county landfill near Columbia is open.

How do you make a DIY haul go faster?
Stage everything before the trailer arrives, and load heavy items first.
- Sort first. Pull out donations, hazardous waste and metal so the trailer only holds what's going to the scale.
- Break things down. Furniture with legs and drawers wastes space. Ten minutes with a drill can save a second load.
- Load evenly. Put heavy items low and spread across the bed. Light material goes on top, then tarp it.
- Watch the clock. Alpha Ridge's transfer station closes at 3pm. A 6pm return to us avoids the $25 late fee.
- Get delivery if you can't tow. We deliver for $75 each way in Howard County ($79.50 with tax).

Questions
Can I put a mattress in the dump trailer?
Usually yes. Alpha Ridge's guide says it accepts dry mattresses and box springs in its Residents' Convenience Center. Call the site first, because trailer loads go across the scale.
Do junk removal companies charge by weight?
Most price by volume, as a fraction of the truck. Some add weight or item surcharges for heavy debris.
How long does it take to fill a 7x14?
It depends on access and help. Plan your day around the landfill's hours: Alpha Ridge's transfer station closes at 3pm Monday through Saturday.
