Trailer rental checklist: what to bring and check at pickup
Bring a valid driver's license (minimum age 18), a card for the $250 hold, a truck rated for the loaded trailer, the right ball (2-5/16 inch for our 14K dump), a working 7-way or 4-pin plug and a brake controller for electric-brake trailers. At pickup, check the coupler, chains, breakaway, lights, tires and brakes before you pull out.
Key takeaways
- Renter minimum age is 18; bring a valid license and a card for the $250 hold.
- Our 7x14 dump needs a 2-5/16 inch ball, a 7-way plug and a brake controller.
- Maryland requires brakes on trailers over 3,000 lb, and breakaway brakes that hold 15 minutes over 10,000 lb registered.
- Every unit gets a 10-point check with photos texted; if it fails, we swap it or refund you.
- Returns after 6pm: $25 late drop-off fee; not back by 7am the next morning means another day.
What should I bring to pick up a rental trailer?
Bring your license, your card and a truck that's set up for the trailer you booked.
- Valid driver's license. The minimum renter age is 18.
- Card for the hold. $250 for trailers, $500 for machines, released within 24 hours after check-in.
- A tow vehicle rated for the loaded weight. Not just the empty trailer.
- The right ball, on a rated hitch. See the table below.
- A working plug. A 7-way for dump trailers, a 4-pin for a light utility trailer.
- A brake controller for any trailer with electric brakes.
- Gloves. Dump trailers come with a tarp, the car hauler with ramps and straps, the tilt with straps or chains, and enclosed trailers with straps.
If you're not sure your truck has the right ball or plug, check before you drive over. Look at the receiver and ball (the size is usually stamped on top) and at the plug near your rear bumper. A truck that arrives without the right setup loses part of your rental window.
Which ball, plug and brakes does each trailer need?
Match the trailer's coupler, plug and brakes to your truck before pickup day.
| Unit | GVWR | Ball | Plug | Brake controller? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7x14 dump | 14,000 lb | 2-5/16 in | 7-way | Yes (electric, both axles) |
| 6x12 dump | 9,900 lb | 2-5/16 in | 7-way | Yes (electric, both axles) |
| 24' tilt | 14,000 lb | 2-5/16 in | 7-way | Yes |
| 20' car hauler | 9,990 lb | 2-5/16 in | 7-way | Yes |
| Enclosed 6x10 | 2,990 lb | 2 in | 4-pin | No (no brakes) |
| Enclosed 8x20 | Ask us | 2-5/16 in | 7-way | Yes (electric) |
| Utility 6x12 | 2,995 lb | 2 in | 4-pin | No |
Maryland requires brakes on trailers over 3,000 lb. Trailers registered over 10,000 lb need brakes on all wheels plus a breakaway that holds for 15 minutes (Transportation Art. § 22-301). Your vehicle's manufacturer ratings and manual always win. Run your truck through the tow checker before you book. For more on balls and plugs, see 2-inch vs 2-5/16 ball and 7-way vs 4-pin plugs.

Check availabilityWhat should I check at the trailer before I leave?
Walk all the way around the trailer and check these 10 things, hitched and plugged in.
- Coupler: seated on the ball, latch closed, pin or lock in.
- Safety chains: crossed under the tongue, hooked to the truck, with enough slack to turn.
- Breakaway cable: clipped to the truck, not to the chains or the ball.
- Lights: running lights, brake lights and both turn signals working.
- Brakes: controller shows the trailer connected; a low-speed test stop pulls evenly.
- Tires: no cuts or bulges, with pressure at the sidewall's cold rating.
- Lug nuts and wheels: all present, none loose.
- Jack: fully raised and stowed.
- Gate or ramps: latched and pinned.
- Dump trailers: bed down and latched, hydraulic remote working, battery charged.
We run our own 10-point check on every unit and text you the photos. That's the Road-Ready Guarantee: if it fails at pickup, we swap it or refund you. Take your own photos too. They take a minute and protect you at check-in.

The full process is on how it works.
What should I check on the drive?
Pull over somewhere safe after the first few miles and walk around the rig again.
- Coupler still latched and the pin in place.
- Safety chains and breakaway cable still connected, nothing dragging.
- Load and tarp still secure, straps still tight.
- Lights still working, especially if you hit a bump or a pothole.
- Brakes still pulling evenly when you slow down.
Leave extra following distance, take turns wider than you would in the truck alone, and plan a route that doesn't require backing up if you're new to towing. Our published guide on towing a dump trailer safely covers speed, braking and backing. Your vehicle's manufacturer ratings and manual always win.
What should I plan before loading and dumping?
Know your load limit and your landfill before you fill the trailer.
Light debris fills the bed first; stone, soil and concrete hit the weight limit first. A 7x14 carries up to 9,820 lb, and a 6x12 up to 6,800 lb. A loaded 14K dump puts about 1,400–2,100 lb on the hitch.
Every county weighs and charges rented or tandem-axle trailer loads, and none opens Sunday. If you'd rather not make the dump run, Return It Loaded means we dump it for the county scale price plus $49 ($51.94 with tax).
Landfill fees, hours and rules are set by each county or site and can change without notice. We don't control them; call the site before you go.
Where should I park the trailer at home?
In your driveway, if your HOA or village covenant allows it. Street parking has time limits.
Howard County limits commercial vehicles on residential streets to 6 hours (Code § 21.232). Baltimore County fines commercial trailers on residential roads $250 a day (Code § 18-2-206). Sykesville has a 48-hour on-street trailer limit. In Columbia, village covenants vary. Oakland Mills, for example, bans storing trailers in the open.
Chock the wheels on any slope, and leave the trailer where a delivery truck or neighbor can get around it.
Questions
Can someone else pick up the trailer for me?
The person towing should be the renter or an authorized driver, at least 18, with a valid license. Text us ahead to set it up.
Do I need my own insurance?
Ask your auto insurer whether your policy covers a rented trailer while you tow it, and read our damage waiver guide before you book.
What if my truck doesn't have a 7-way plug?
You'll need one installed, along with a brake controller, before you can tow our dump trailers. Or book delivery: $75 each way in Howard County ($79.50 with tax).
