Big-box vs local trailer rental: what to compare before you book
Compare more than the daily rate. Check the trailer's real capacity in cubic yards and payload, the hitch and brakes it needs, the rental window, the card hold, after-hours returns and whether anyone will dump it for you. For example, one big-box 6x10 dump lists 108 ft3 (4 yd3). Our 7x14 holds 7.17 yd3 and 9,820 lb for $165/day ($174.90 with tax).
Key takeaways
- Compare cubic yards and payload, not just length: 108 ft3 is 4 yd3.
- Check the hitch ball (2-inch or 2-5/16) and brake type (surge or electric) against your truck.
- Ask exactly when the rental window starts and ends; our weekend rate covers any 2 or 3 days in a row.
- Ask about the hold amount and how fast it's released; ours is $250, released within 24 hours.
- Always compare the total with 6% Maryland sales tax.
Why isn't the daily rate enough to compare?
Because the trailer that's cheapest per day can cost more per job if it holds less, needs an extra trip or runs out of time before you're done.
The rate that matters is the total cost of getting the job done: the rental with tax, the number of trips, the disposal and any fees. Start with the job and work back to the trailer. Our guide on which trailer you need helps you pick the type first.
Three things change the real cost most: how much the trailer holds, whether your truck can tow it legally and safely, and how long you actually get it. A short window that forces a second rental day can cost more than a higher rate with a longer window. Write those three down for every quote.
What specs should I compare side by side?
Compare capacity, payload, hitch, brakes and empty weight. Those decide whether the trailer fits your job and your truck.
Here's how one published big-box listing compares with our dump trailers. These are published specs only, not prices.
| Spec | Big-box 6x10 dump (as listed) | IronBay 6x12 dump | IronBay 7x14 dump |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bed | 120 x 72 x 26 in | 144 x 72 in, 20 in sides | 168 x 83 in, 24 in sides |
| Capacity | 108 ft³ (4.0 yd³) | 4.44 yd³ | 7.17 yd³ |
| Load rating | Listed as 3,500 lb in specs and 4,500 lb in highlights | 6,800 lb payload | 9,820 lb payload |
| Empty weight | 2,500 lb | 3,100 lb | 4,180 lb |
| Hitch | 2-5/16 in | 2-5/16 in ball, 7-way plug | 2-5/16 in ball, 7-way plug |
| Brakes | Hydraulic surge | Electric | Electric, both axles |
When a listing shows two different load numbers, ask the store which one applies before you load. Surge brakes work without a brake controller in the truck; electric brakes need one.

See all pricesWhat rental terms should I ask about?
Ask when the clock starts, when it stops, what happens after hours and how big the card hold is.
| Question to ask | IronBay's answer |
|---|---|
| Shortest rental? | One day on every trailer |
| Weekend rate? | Any 2 or 3 days in a row, one price |
| After-hours pickup and return? | 24/7; returns after 6pm carry a $25 late drop-off fee |
| When is another day charged? | If the trailer isn't back by 7am the next morning |
| Card hold? | $250 ($500 for machines), released within 24 hours after check-in |
| Damage charges? | Itemized notice with photos before any charge |
| Done early? | Text OFF and billing stops |
| Minimum renter age? | 18 |
Write down the other yard's answers to the same questions before you book. The pricing page has every unit's rate.
Ask about the return, too. Some rentals must go back to the same store they came from during store hours. Ours can come back any time, day or night, as long as you know the late drop-off and next-day rules above.
Does anyone check the trailer before I tow it?
Ask. A trailer that fails on the road costs you the day.
Ours get the Road-Ready Guarantee: a 10-point check with photos texted to you. If it fails at pickup, we swap it or refund you. Whoever you rent from, walk around the trailer yourself. Check the tires, lights, safety chains, breakaway cable and coupler latch before you leave. Our pickup checklist lists every item. Your vehicle's manufacturer ratings and manual always win.
Ask whether you'll get a record of the trailer's condition at pickup. Photos taken before you tow protect you at check-in if there's ever a question about damage.
Who handles the dump run?
Most rentals stop at the trailer. Ask whether delivery or disposal help is available, because the landfill is often the slowest part of the job.
Every county near Columbia weighs and charges rented or tandem-axle trailer loads, and none opens Sunday. With Return It Loaded, we dump it for the county scale price plus $49 ($51.94 with tax). Delivery is $75 each way in Howard County ($79.50 with tax) and $125 each way in Anne Arundel, Baltimore and Carroll counties and the City of Laurel ($132.50 with tax).
Landfill fees, hours and rules are set by each county or site and can change without notice. We don't control them; call the site before you go.
Ask any yard you're comparing the same two questions: will you deliver to my address, and what does it cost each way, with tax?
What should contractors compare?
Contractors should compare the account terms, the weekly rate and how many units are available on a busy week.
Our contractor accounts pay before each rental with the card on file. There are no net terms. The 7x14 runs $549 a week on account ($581.94 with tax), with 10% off when you run 3 or more units. Ask any yard you're comparing how many units it has on hand, whether it delivers to job sites, and whether it will dump loaded trailers for you. Details are on the contractor page.
How do I compare the total cost?
Add up the rental with tax, the trips, the disposal and any fees for the same job, then compare.
Example: a 7-yard cleanout in a 7x14 is one load, at $165 for a day ($174.90 with tax). A 4-yard trailer needs two loads for the same job, which means two trips to the scale and possibly a second rental period. Compare the total, with tax, for the whole job.
Questions
Do I need my own truck for a big-box trailer rental?
Usually, yes, and it must have the right ball and plug. Check each store's terms. We offer delivery if you don't want to tow.
Is a bigger dump trailer harder to tow?
Yes. A loaded 7x14 puts about 1,400–2,100 lb on the hitch and needs a 3/4-ton or larger truck. Check yours with the tow checker.
