A landscaper's guide to trailers: utility, dump or tilt?
Pick the trailer by what you're hauling. A utility trailer moves mowers, tools and bagged goods. A dump trailer handles bulk mulch, soil and stone: a 7x14 carries up to 9,820 lb, or about 3.6 yd3 of gravel. A 24-foot tilt moves skid steers and mini excavators. Most landscape crews need two of the three.
Key takeaways
- Mulch (~800 lb/yd3) fills a 6x12 dump by volume: about 4.4 yd3.
- Stone (~2,700 lb/yd3) hits weight first: about 2.5 yd3 in a 6x12, 3.6 yd3 in a 7x14.
- A 24-foot tilt carries ~9,700 lb, enough for a mid-size skid steer like the 8,061 lb Bobcat S650.
- Maryland requires brakes on any trailer over 3,000 lb.
- Mulch season runs March to May and leaf season October to December, so book early.
Which trailer fits which landscaping job?
Match the trailer to the heaviest, bulkiest thing you'll move that day.
| Job | Best trailer | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mowing route, hand tools, bagged mulch | Utility | Low deck, ramp gate, lightest tow |
| Bulk mulch, topsoil, leaf and brush hauling | 6x12 dump | Dumps in seconds; 4.44 yd³ bed |
| Gravel, base stone, pavers, spoils | 7x14 dump | 9,820 lb payload for dense loads |
| Skid steer, mini excavator, compact tractor | 24' tilt | Gravity tilt, no ramps to lift |
| Hardscape install with a machine | Tilt + 7x14 dump | One brings the machine, one hauls the material |
Our published guide on which trailer you need covers moving and other non-landscape jobs.
Most crews in Howard and Anne Arundel County run the same pattern: a utility trailer on the daily route, a dump trailer for any job that involves bulk material, and a tilt only when a machine is on the schedule. The mistake we see most is a crew shoveling three yards of mulch off a utility deck when a dump trailer would have tipped it in under a minute.
How much mulch, soil or stone can each dump trailer carry?
Light materials fill the bed before they hit the weight limit. Heavy materials hit the weight limit first.
| Material (lb/yd³) | 6x12 dump (4.44 yd³, 6,800 lb) | 7x14 dump (7.17 yd³, 9,820 lb) |
|---|---|---|
| Mulch (~800) | ~4.4 yd³ (bed full, ~3,550 lb) | ~7.2 yd³ (bed full, ~5,740 lb) |
| Topsoil (~2,100) | ~3.2 yd³ | ~4.7 yd³ |
| Gravel, sand, stone (~2,700) | ~2.5 yd³ | ~3.6 yd³ |
| Brush (~127) | bed full | bed full |
A heaping load of stone will put you over the payload rating. Ask the supplier to load by weight, not by bucket count. The load calculator does this math for any material. For mulch math by bed size, see how much mulch you need.

Open a contractor accountWhat do I need to tow each trailer?
Utility trailers tow behind most half-ton trucks. A loaded dump or tilt needs a 3/4-ton or larger truck with a brake controller.
- Utility (6x12): 2,995 lb GVWR, 2-inch ball, 4-pin plug.
- 6x12 dump: 9,900 lb GVWR, electric brakes, 7-way plug and a brake controller.
- 7x14 dump: 14,000 lb GVWR, 2-5/16-inch ball, 7-way plug, electric brakes on both axles. Loaded, it puts about 1,400–2,100 lb on the hitch.
- 24' tilt: 14,000 lb GVWR, about 9,700 lb payload (dealer figure).
Maryland requires brakes on any trailer over 3,000 lb. Trailers registered over 10,000 lb need brakes on all wheels plus a breakaway that holds for 15 minutes (Transportation Art. § 22-301). A 2026 F-150 is limited to a 500 lb tongue and a 5,000 lb trailer without weight distribution, so it isn't a match for a loaded 7x14. Your vehicle's manufacturer ratings and manual always win. Check your truck in the tow checker.
Will a tilt trailer carry my skid steer?
A 24-foot tilt carries about 9,700 lb, which covers most mid-size skid steers and 3–4 ton mini excavators with a bucket.
For scale, Bobcat lists the S650 skid steer at 8,061 lb operating weight and the E35 mini excavator at 7,659 lb in its base configuration. Add attachments and fuel to the machine weight before you load, and keep the total under the trailer's payload. The tilt has an 8-foot stationary section and a 16-foot tilt deck. Position the machine so 10–15% of the total weight sits on the hitch. Your vehicle's manufacturer ratings and manual always win. The 24' tilt page has the full specs. Chain the machine down at all four tie-down points before you move, and lower the bucket to the deck.
When should a landscape crew rent instead of own?
Rent the trailers you need only in peak season or for one job type. Own the one that works every day.
Plenty of crews own a utility trailer for the mowing route and rent dumps for mulch season (March–May) and leaf season (October–December). They rent a tilt only when a machine job comes up. Trailer demand peaks in June, so book dumps and tilts early in spring.
| Unit | Day | Weekend (any 2–3 days) | Week |
|---|---|---|---|
| Utility | $60 ($63.60) | $99 ($104.94) | $225 ($238.50) |
| 6x12 dump | $119 ($126.14) | $199 ($210.94) | $449 ($475.94) |
| 7x14 dump | $165 ($174.90) | $279 ($295.74) | $595 ($630.70) |
| 24' tilt | $175 ($185.50) | $299 ($316.94) | $650 ($689.00) |
Prices are base, with the total including 6% Maryland sales tax in parentheses. Contractor accounts get the 7x14 for $549 a week ($581.94 with tax) and 10% off 3 or more units. Contractors pay before each rental with the card on file, and there are no net terms. Set up on the contractor page.
What about dumping green waste and spoils?
Every county weighs and charges rented or tandem-axle trailer loads, and none opens Sunday, so plan your dump runs for weekdays or Saturday.
Alpha Ridge takes Howard County waste only and may refuse soil or large concrete. Carroll's Northern Landfill refuses stumps and concrete over 6 inches. If you'd rather keep the crew on the job, Return It Loaded means we dump it for the scale price plus $49 ($51.94 with tax).
Landfill fees, hours and rules are set by each county or site and can change without notice. We don't control them; call the site before you go.
Questions
Can I haul mulch in a utility trailer?
Yes, but you'll shovel it out by hand. For more than a couple of yards, a dump trailer saves an hour or more of labor on every load.
Do you deliver trailers to job sites?
Yes. Delivery is $75 each way in Howard County ($79.50 with tax) and $125 each way in Anne Arundel, Baltimore and Carroll counties and the City of Laurel ($132.50 with tax).
Can I park a landscape trailer on the street overnight?
Check local rules first. Howard County limits commercial vehicles on residential streets to 6 hours, and Sykesville has a 48-hour on-street trailer limit.
