How to load a dump trailer so it dumps clean

Short answer

Spread the load evenly, put the heaviest material on the floor over and just ahead of the axles, and keep it level with or below the 24-inch sides on our 7x14. Stay under the 9,820-lb payload, close and latch the rear gate, and tarp it. To dump clean, park on firm, level ground, check for overhead lines, open the gate and raise the bed slowly.

Key takeaways

  • Heavy material goes on the floor over the axles, never all at the rear.
  • Weight runs out before space with gravel, soil or concrete: about 3.6 yd³ of gravel maxes out a 7x14.
  • A loaded 14K dump puts about 1,400–2,100 lb (10–15%) on the hitch.
  • Raise the bed only on firm, level ground, with no power lines overhead.
  • If a load sticks, lower the bed fully and dig it loose by hand. Never jerk the truck.

Where should the weight go in a dump trailer?

Put it low, spread evenly side to side, and centered over and just ahead of the axles.

The trailer's manufacturer guidance is simple: spread the load front to back and side to side, keep heavy items on the floor over the axles, and keep the very front light enough that you don't strain the hoist. Too much weight at the rear lightens the tongue and can cause sway at highway speed.

ZoneWhat goes thereWhy
Front thirdMedium-weight debris, bagged trash, lumber laid flatKeeps tongue weight up without overloading the hoist
Over the axlesThe heaviest stuff: tile, plaster, wet drywall, stone, soilThe axles carry it, not your hitch
Rear thirdLight, bulky items: cushions, insulation, brushLittle weight behind the axles means less sway

A loaded 14K dump puts about 1,400–2,100 lb on the hitch, or 10–15% of the trailer's weight. If the truck squats hard or the trailer tongue points up, the load is off. See our tongue weight guide for how to check it. Your vehicle's manufacturer ratings and manual always win.

How full can I fill it before it's too heavy?

It depends on the material: dense material hits the weight limit long before the bed is full.

Our 7x14 holds 7.17 cubic yards level with its 24-inch sides and carries 9,820 lb. The 6x12 holds 4.44 cubic yards and carries 6,800 lb. Divide the payload by the material's weight per yard to see which limit you'll hit first.

Material (lb/yd³)7x14 max load6x12 max loadWhat limits you
Gravel, sand, stone (~2,700)~3.6 yd³~2.5 yd³Weight
Topsoil (~2,100)~4.7 yd³~3.2 yd³Weight
Mulch (~800)7.17 yd³ (level)4.44 yd³ (level)Space
Asphalt shingles (731)7.17 yd³, about 18 squares4.44 yd³, about 11 squaresSpace
Mixed C&D (417–484)7.17 yd³ (level)4.44 yd³ (level)Space

Plug your own mix into the load calculator, or read how much a dump trailer holds for the full breakdown. Don't heap material above the sides. It blows out on the highway, and heaped loads are usually overweight anyway.

What order should I load it in so it dumps clean?

Load by material, keep long pieces running lengthwise, and don't wedge anything across the bed.

  • Sort first. Counties price by material. In Howard County, Alpha Ridge charges $106/ton for C&D. Anne Arundel's Millersville site charges $200/ton for stumps and concrete, against $100/ton for rental-trailer loads. One mixed load gets charged at the worst rate.
  • Lay long pieces lengthwise. Lumber, pipe and trim lying front to back slide out. Pieces jammed side to side can bridge between the walls and hang up when you tip.
  • Break furniture down. A sofa frame wedged against both sides is the most common reason a load won't slide.
  • Keep shingles in their own load if you can. Baltimore County takes only 2 cubic yards of shingles at a time, at $200/ton.
  • Keep the rear gate area clear. Nothing should lean on the doors. When they open, a heavy lean pushes them hard.

Every county weighs rented trailer loads, and none opens Sunday. Howard treats rental trailers as commercial loads, and commercial hours at Alpha Ridge end at 3:30pm. Landfill fees, hours and rules are set by each county or site and can change without notice. We don't control them; call the site before you go. County-by-county details are on our Howard County dump guide.

How do I secure and tarp the load?

Strap down anything that can shift, tarp anything that can blow, and lock the rear gate before you move.

The Big Tex 14LP comes with a roll tarp and a shroud that protects it, plus four half-inch D-rings and J-hooks inside the bed for straps. Use them for anything that can slide or bounce: doors, appliances, long lumber. Loose, flowable material like soil or mulch just needs the tarp pulled tight and latched.

The rear gate works as barn doors or a spreader gate. For hauling, close both doors and latch them. If you use it as a spreader, set both metering chains to the same length, or one side will spill faster.

Before you pull out, walk around the trailer once: gate latched, tarp down, nothing hanging over the sides, jack up, chains crossed, breakaway cable clipped to the truck.

How do I dump it without tipping or getting stuck?

Park on firm, level ground, look up, open the gate, and raise the bed slowly.

  1. Stop with the truck and trailer straight and level, side to side and front to back. A slope makes a raised bed unstable.
  2. Look up. Raising a bed near power lines is dangerous even without touching them.
  3. Stand to the side and unlock the gate. Swing the barn doors open and secure them. For a spreader gate, stand clear, because the load can push it open hard.
  4. Raise the bed slowly and watch the load move. Don't fully raise a load that's all sitting at the rear.
  5. If the load hangs up, lower the bed fully and dig it loose by hand. Never jerk the truck forward or brake hard to shake it out.
  6. Lower the bed completely, close and latch the gate, then move.

At Alpha Ridge, the weighmaster tells you where to dump. Weigh in, dump where they say, then weigh out. You're billed on the difference.

What if I don't want to dump it myself?

Bring it back loaded and we'll take it to the scale for you.

With Return It Loaded, we dump it for the county scale price plus $49 ($51.94 with tax). It's handy when the landfill closes before you're done, or on a Sunday, when no county site is open. You can return 24/7. Returns after our 6pm close carry a $25 late drop-off fee ($26.50 with tax), and a trailer not back by 7am the next morning is charged another day. Here's how pickup and return work.

Questions

Can I load a dump trailer with a skid steer or excavator?

Yes. Load from the side, keep the bucket low, and set material down rather than dropping it from height onto the 10-gauge steel floor. Spread it over the axles as you go.

Can I leave a loaded trailer on my street overnight in Howard County?

Plan on the driveway. Howard County Code § 21.232 limits commercial vehicles on residential streets to 6 hours, with fines of $250, $500 and $750.

Do I need to sweep the trailer out?

Return it empty and broom-clean unless you booked Return It Loaded.
