Can you put concrete in a dump trailer?

Short answer

Yes, and broken concrete is one of the best uses for a dump trailer, as long as you load by weight, not by sight. Solid concrete weighs about 3,915 lb per cubic yard, so our 7x14's 9,820-lb payload carries about 2.5 cubic yards. That's roughly 200 square feet of 4-inch slab, with the bed only about a third full.

Key takeaways

  • Normal-weight concrete is about 145 lb per cubic foot, or 3,915 lb per cubic yard.
  • A 7x14 dump carries about 2.5 yd³ of concrete; a 6x12 carries about 1.7 yd³.
  • A 4-inch slab weighs about 48 lb per square foot: about 200 sq ft per 7x14 load.
  • The trailer reaches its weight limit with the bed about a third full. Don't fill it to the top.
  • Many landfills refuse or surcharge concrete; recyclers are usually the right destination.

How much concrete can each dump trailer carry?

The payload sets the limit: about 2.5 cubic yards in a 7x14 and about 1.7 in a 6x12.

The Federal Highway Administration's bridge design guidance uses 145 lb per cubic foot for normal-weight concrete. That's 3,915 lb per cubic yard of solid concrete. Divide each trailer's payload by that:

TrailerPayloadSolid concrete4-in slab6-in slab
7x14 dump (14,000 lb GVWR)9,820 lb~2.5 yd³~200 sq ft~135 sq ft
6x12 dump (9,900 lb GVWR)6,800 lb~1.7 yd³~140 sq ft~94 sq ft

A 4-inch slab weighs about 48 lb per square foot (145 ÷ 3). A 6-inch slab weighs about 72.5. Rebar and wire mesh add a little more. Get exact numbers for your job from the load calculator.

Why can't I fill the bed to the top?

Because a full 7x14 bed of concrete would weigh about three times what the trailer is rated to carry.

The 7x14's bed holds 7.17 cubic yards to the top of its 24-inch sides. Filled with solid concrete, that would be over 28,000 lb on a trailer rated for 9,820 lb of cargo. Broken pieces have gaps between them, so loose rubble weighs less per yard than solid concrete. Even so, you'll reach the payload with the bed about one-third to one-half full. Stop there.

Overloading cooks tires and bearings, strains the hoist and pushes your truck past its ratings. A loaded 14K dump already puts about 1,400 to 2,100 lb on the hitch. That's beyond a half-ton's tongue rating; a 2026 F-150 is rated for 500 lb without weight distribution. Check your setup with the tow checker. Your vehicle's manufacturer ratings and manual always win.

Signs you've loaded too much: the trailer tires bulge at the sidewalls, the truck's rear squats and the headlights point up, or the coupler sits nose-down. If you see any of these, shovel some off before you leave. It's much easier than limping a heavy load down Route 32.

Worked example: how many loads is my patio?

A 10x20-foot, 4-inch patio is about 9,670 lb, which is right at one 7x14's limit. Split it into two loads to keep a safety margin.

  1. Area: 10 × 20 = 200 square feet.
  2. Weight: 200 × 48.3 lb = about 9,670 lb.
  3. 7x14 payload: 9,820 lb. That's one load with only about 150 lb to spare, so plan two.
  4. 6x12 payload: 6,800 lb. That's two loads.

On the 7x14, two half loads in a day keep you safe and still fit a single day's rental, $165 ($174.90 with tax). If the slab is 6 inches thick or has thickened edges, add a load.

Breaking the slab yourself? Rent the trailer for the day you load, not the days you spend jackhammering. That keeps the rental to a single day.

How should I load concrete into a dump trailer?

Set pieces in low and spread them evenly between the axles. Don't drop slabs from a bucket height.

  • Place pieces, don't drop them. A big slab dropped from a loader bucket can dent the floor.
  • Center the weight over and slightly ahead of the axles to keep tongue weight in the 10–15% range.
  • Keep pieces below the side height, and cut rebar flush so it can't snag the gate.
  • Dump on level ground, raise the bed slowly and pull forward as the load slides.

What does it cost to haul and dump a load of concrete?

The trailer is the cheap part. Where you dump decides the bill.

Example: one full 7x14 load at its 9,820-lb payload is about 4.9 tons of concrete.

DestinationRateOne full 7x14 load (~4.9 tons)
Anne Arundel, Millersville$200/ton (concrete)~$982
Baltimore Recycling Center (private)$93/ton, 1-ton minimum~$457
Howard recyclers in the county guideFee varies by materialCall for a quote
Howard, Alpha RidgeRefuses large quantitiesNot an option for a full load

Add the trailer: $165 a day ($174.90 with tax) for the 7x14, or $119 ($126.14 with tax) for the 6x12. Two half loads to a recycler often cost less than one full load to a county site, and they're easier on your truck.

Gravel and stone are similar. At about 2,700 lb per cubic yard, a 7x14 carries roughly 3.6 cubic yards of gravel before it hits its payload. That's half the bed. Our guide to how much gravel a dump trailer can carry has the details.

Where can I take broken concrete near Columbia?

Usually to a concrete recycler, because several county landfills refuse it or charge extra.

SiteConcrete rule
Howard, Alpha RidgeRefuses large quantities of stone, brick, block, asphalt and concrete from contractors; small broken paving is $106/ton
Anne Arundel, MillersvilleStumps and concrete $200/ton
Carroll, Northern LandfillRefuses concrete over 6 inches

Howard County's C&D recycling guide lists private concrete recyclers. We compiled the closest ones in where to recycle concrete, brick and block near Columbia. Landfill fees, hours and rules are set by each county or site and can change without notice. We don't control them; call the site before you go.

Call the recycler first and ask five questions: Do you take loads in a dump trailer? Is rebar or wire mesh OK? Is there a maximum piece size? Do you charge by the ton or by the load? What are today's hours? Saturday hours are shorter at most sites, and no county landfill is open Sunday.

Questions

Can I haul wet, fresh concrete in a dump trailer?

No. Our dump trailers are for broken, cured concrete and debris, not ready-mix.

Does rebar have to come out?

It depends on the recycler. Some take concrete with rebar and some don't. Call ahead.

Is a 6x12 better for concrete?

It carries less (6,800 lb), but it's lighter to tow and fits tight driveways. For big slabs the 7x14 needs fewer trips.
