Can my truck tow a dump trailer?

Two numbers decide it: your truck's max trailer weight and its max tongue weight. A trailer puts about 10–15% of its loaded weight on your hitch, so a full 14,000-lb dump trailer means 1,400–2,100 lb on the ball.

The short version

  • Half-ton pickups can often pull our trailers empty. Loaded, most can't pull the 14K units without a weight-distribution hitch. A 2026 F-150 is rated for 500 lb of tongue weight and 5,000 lb of trailer without one.
  • ¾-ton and one-ton pickups are what the 7x14 and the 24' tilt are built for. A 2026 Silverado 2500HD is rated for 14,500 lb (gas) to 18,500 lb (diesel) on a ball hitch.
  • Every braked trailer needs a brake controller. Maryland requires brakes on trailers over 3,000 lb, and brakes on all wheels plus a breakaway system over 10,000 lb.
  • CDL: hauling for work, a heavy truck plus a loaded 14K trailer can top 26,000 lb combined, which needs a Class A CDL.
